An update on the cell-free DNA-derived methylome as a non-invasive biomarker for coronary artery disease

Dash M, Mahajan B, Dar GM, Sahu P, Saluja SS. An update on the cell-free DNA-derived methylome as a non-invasive biomarker for coronary artery disease. The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology. 2024 Feb 28:106555.

Highlights

  • Cardiac cell necrosis by atherosclerotic plaque rupture triggers myocardial infarction.

  • cfDNA released from the necrotized cells represents the tissue specificity.

  • cfDNA is explored to comprehend the epigenomic landscape and CAD pathophysiology.

  • The differential methylation pattern in CAD patients can be a potential biomarker(s) to detect CAD.

Sex differences in cardiometabolic health

Dar, G.M. Sex differences in cardiometabolic health. Nat Rev Endocrinol (2023).
Women and men have different risk profiles for certain health conditions. For instance, differences in body composition between men and women are thought to partially underlie the different cardiometabolic risk profiles of men and women. Although men and women have similar levels of risk of obesity, their distribution of body adipose tissue differs. Men tend to carry excess weight as visceral adipose tissue (VAT), which is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, whereas women often carry more excess weight as subcutaneous adipose tissue. This difference might partially explain why men are at a higher risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases than women despite similar levels of obesity.

Genetic Aberration Analysis of Mitochondrial Respiratory Complex I Implications in the Development of Neurological Disorders and Their Clinical Significance

Dar GM, Ahmad E, Ali A, Mahajan B, Ashraf GM, Saluja SS. Genetic Aberration Analysis of Mitochondrial Respiratory Complex I Implications in the Development of Neurological Disorders and Their Clinical Significance. Ageing Res Rev. 2023 Mar 9:101906
Growing neurological diseases pose difficult challenges for modern medicine to diagnose and manage them effectively. Many neurological disorders mainly occur due to genetic alteration in genes encoding mitochondrial proteins. Moreover, mitochondrial genes exhibit a higher rate of mutation due to the generation of Reactive oxygen species (ROS) during oxidative phosphorylation operating in their vicinity.

Implication of gut microbes and its metabolites in colorectal cancer

Kumar A, Ali A, Kapardar RK, Dar GM, Sharma AK, Verma R, Sattar RS, Ahmad E, Mahajan B, Saluja SS. Implication of gut microbes and its metabolites in colorectal cancer. Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology. 2022 Dec 27:1-25.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer with a significant impact on loss of life. In 2020, nearly 1.9 million new cases and over 9,35,000 deaths were reported. Numerous microbes that are abundant in the human gut benefit host physiology in many ways. Although the underlying mechanism is still unknown, their association appears to be crucial in the beginning and progression of CRC.

A non-invasive miRNA-based approach in early diagnosis and therapeutics of oral cancer.

Dar GM, Agarwal S, Kumar A, Sharma AK, Verma R, Sattar RS, Ahmad E, Ali A, Mahajan B, Saluja SS, Meher R. A non-invasive miRNA-based approach in early diagnosis and therapeutics of oral cancer. Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology. 2022 Oct 17:103850.

Understanding the miRNA interplays in oral cancers could augment the development of potential diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic tools. Liquid biopsy- a non-invasive approach that has been used lately, allows the determination of miRNAs in biological fluids that play essential roles in tumor suppression and cancer promotion. Herein, we summarize an update on the role of miRNAs in the diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer.

Diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in colorectal cancer and the potential role of exosomes in drug delivery.

Sattar RS, Verma R, Kumar A, Dar GM, Sharma AK, Kumari I, Ahmad E, Ali A, Mahajan B, Saluja SS. Diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in colorectal cancer and the potential role of exosomes in drug delivery. Cellular Signalling. 2022 Jul 27:110413

Exosomes can be potential candidates that can be employed in the drug delivery system. Further, the integration of in vitro, in vivo and in silico models that involve CRC biomarkers will help to understand the interactions occurring at the cellular level. This review summarizes recent update on CRC biomarkers and their application along with the nanoparticles followed by the application of organoid culture in CRC.

Teerakanchana's equation transcends over 12 other LDL-C quantification formula in the North Indian population

Mehdi Dar G, Dash M, Mahajan B. Teerakanchana's equation transcends over 12 other LDL-C quantification formula in the North Indian population. Clinica Chimica Acta. 2022 Apr 7:S0009-8981(22)00126-7

The indirect method of LDL-C quantification by Friedewald’s formula is more widely used in Indian clinical settings than direct assays due to its time and cost-effectiveness. However, its accuracy has been questioned for a long. We tried to find the formula that work in the best agreement with the direct method.
